George Bailey (James Stewart), who is on the brink of bankruptcy, is about to commit suicide by throwing himself into a river on Christmas Eve. He has dedicated his life to his small town and its people, being a kind, compassionate, reliable, and helpful person. Despite surviving the Great Depression unscathed, he has had to put off earning money, pursuing his dream of becoming an architect, and traveling the world. Through his housing and finance company, which he inherited from his father, he has made almost everyone in town a homeowner. However, his good deeds clash with the selfish interests of the heartless banker, Henry F. Potter (Lionel Barrymore). Potter is constantly after Bailey. One day, an opportunity arises for Potter when a significant amount of money belonging to Bailey's alcoholic and elderly uncle, Billy Bailey (Thomas Mitchell), ends up in Potter's hands due to Billy's absentmindedness. After a bank inspection reveals the company's deficit, it becomes clear that bankruptcy and imprisonment await Bailey. Feeling desperate, Bailey is about to throw himself into the river when an angel named Clarence (Henry Travers) is sent down to save him from death. The angel grants Bailey's wish and shows him a world where he has never been born or lived. Bailey realizes that this world is not beautiful at all and understands that people often fail to realize the countless contributions and kindness they bring to their surroundings.
